Harold Arlen

Harold Arlen, born Hyman Arluck on February 15, 1905, and passing away on April 23, 1986, was an American composer of popular music and a prominent figure in the world of musical theater and film. He is best known for his contributions to the Great American Songbook, having composed numerous classic songs that have become enduring standards.

Arlen was born in Buffalo, New York, to a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia. He displayed a musical aptitude from a young age and learned to play the piano and other instruments. During his early career, he performed as a pianist in various bands and worked as an accompanist for vaudeville acts.

In the 1930s, Arlen began collaborating with lyricist Ted Koehler and later with Yip Harburg. Together, they created several hits, including "Get Happy," "Stormy Weather," and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." Arlen's music often had a bluesy and jazzy quality, which set it apart from many of his contemporaries.

Perhaps his most famous collaboration came with lyricist E.Y. "Yip" Harburg when they worked on the score for the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz." The film featured iconic songs like "Over the Rainbow", which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became one of Judy Garland's signature tunes.
